Accessibility remediation for course materials

Accessible course materials, from the files instructors already use

AIDRE repairs Word and PowerPoint course materials for WCAG 2.1 Level AA: headings, tables, image descriptions, contrast, links, and the equations that STEM courses depend on.

Why now

Course materials now have a deadline

The ADA Title II rule requires public colleges' web content, including the course materials they post online, to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA. The compliance dates are April 26, 2027 for public entities in jurisdictions of 50,000 people or more, and April 26, 2028 for smaller ones.

Dates as extended by the Justice Department in April 2026. Read the notice in the Federal Register.

  • The rules are specialist knowledge

Meeting the standard means real headings, marked table headers, document titles, readable contrast and a meaningful description of every image. Few instructors know these rules, and fewer have the hours to apply them by hand.

  • STEM courses are hit hardest

Typing worked solutions with equations takes so long that many instructors post handwritten scans, which a screen reader cannot read. Faced with the workload, some instructors are weighing a reduced online presence for their courses.

  • Checkers flag problems; someone still has to fix them

Accessibility checkers such as Anthology Ally, YuJa Panorama and UDOIT are built to flag issues in posted files, not to repair them. The repair has usually meant hand-editing a PDF in specialist software, and that work is lost at the next edit, because it never reached the source file.

What AIDRE does

Repairs in the source file, where they last

Instructors hand AIDRE a folder of course files and get back repaired Word documents, each with a tagged PDF, and repaired PowerPoint decks. No training in accessibility rules is needed.

  • Image descriptions

A vision model writes a description for each chart, plot, diagram and photo, so a screen-reader user hears what the image shows rather than "image" or "figure".

  • Headings and titles

Headings get real heading styles, documents get a title from their own opening line, and every slide gets a real title, so a screen reader can navigate.

  • Tables

Data tables get marked header rows. Boxes and banners built from tables for layout are recognized and turned back into ordinary text.

  • Equations

Equations from older equation editors become native Word math, and AIDRE corrects the equation layouts that would otherwise come out wrong in the PDF.

  • Contrast, links and language

Low-contrast text is adjusted until it is readable while keeping its color family, vague links like "click here" get a label that says where they go, and the document language is set.

  • Accessible solution keys

Give AIDRE a scan of handwritten solutions and the blank assessment, and it returns a typed key held to the same standard as every other document: equations as real math, figures with descriptions, tables filled in, and a tagged PDF. It can also draft the solutions, graphs and diagrams included, for the instructor to review.

Built for real courses

Made for the way instructors work

  • Edits don't undo the work

Because the Word or PowerPoint file itself is repaired, changing a due date or adding a question keeps every earlier repair. When a file changes, run it again.

  • Every change is shown

Each run writes a report and a review page showing every heading it placed and every image beside the description it wrote, so the instructor can check them before posting.

  • Runs on your college's servers

AIDRE is installed by your IT team. It can use a language model running on a campus machine, so documents never leave campus, or a cloud model your college chooses.

  • Tested on real coursework

AIDRE has been developed and tested on hundreds of real course documents, not on samples written for a demonstration.

AIDRE does the remediation. Your checker confirms it.

AIDRE takes on the work that stands between a course document and WCAG 2.1 Level AA, the structure, descriptions, contrast, links and math, and does it in the file the instructor edits, showing every change. It does not grade its own work. The instructor's review and your accessibility checker, such as Ally, Panorama or UDOIT, confirm the file you post, so the tools your college already has keep their place in the process.

Where AIDRE works best. Word and PowerPoint source files are the primary path. AIDRE can also improve a PDF that already carries accessibility tags, adding descriptions, table headers, link labels and a title, but that is an improvement to an existing file, not full remediation.
